GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. -- When this mini-van pulled
into the Golden Valley Animal Humane society Thursday it might as well have been Santa's sleigh, for the joy is holds,
is immeasurable.
Michael Dougherty will be playing Santa for our little story here and for over a year he has run
the Puppy Pipeline, rescuing dogs that would be euthanized in rural Georgia and bringing them to the Twin Cities to be adopted.
"It's one of those things, it's the first thing I have ever done in my life that I feel like I'm
good at. I don't make any money, but, money isn't everything," Dougherty said of his work.
He actually
spends his own money to drive up here. He also bought the van himself. So far, he has rescued 1,005 adorable little puppies.
"I can't prove this but rescue dogs, they know they have been rescued and they repay the love many times
over," Dougherty said.
After all 34 of these pups get documented, they head for the tender care of the humane
society staff.
After that they will be looking for a home.
"You know what, no more hot Georgia
summers anymore, no hot Georgia summers, you get to romp and play in the snow," Dougherty told the pups.
It
is a labor of love for Michael who couldn't bear to see another puppy neglected in his home state.
"It
feels better than a bonus, better than a paycheck."
And in times like these, bonus checks aren't coming.
So maybe a puppy, for some of you out there, is bonus enough.
